Got Contentment?

The view of the city from Brooklyn was inspiring. As my wife and I sat there taking in the random view several things occurred to me. One of which was the view of the Statue of Liberty. It was that very place that millions of people descended on hoping to achieve and to live out their dreams. America became the place where dreams come true. It is inspiring to think that people were in a place where all their dreams were finally reality. They were not hopes or wishes anymore they were actually reality. What would my life look like if that were the case for me?

Those thoughts have lied dormant in my mind ever since that day. Recently they were resurrected by a fellow blogger Spencer Spellman in his post "Write Your Own Story". In his post he comments on his struggles to write his own story. I related to much of what he said and then it hit me. Much of my own life is spent dealing with this strange sense of contentment.

As the pages turn in my own story I keep wondering what is next. What lies on the horizon for me? Where is the next adventure going to take me? I get so caught up in the future and where the future will take me that I forget to recognize success when it is in my present. Paul lived in an alternate reality when he said "I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances." (Phil 4.11b) Sadly I have not. So my life is defined as a series of searching for the next destination. While I do that I fail to recognize and embrace the success of my present circumstances. What is the secret to contentment?

Contentment is a buried treasure for which we search and search and search hoping one day to stumble upon it. The treasure lies beneath the surface of a life that has been able to rid itself of all anxiety of our past, present, and futures.

More to Come
